How Matters.AI Finds and Fixes Hidden SaaS Security Risks

OCTOBER 2026

TL;DR:

  • Episode 1 Core Topic: SaaS Classification and Visibility using Matters.AI as an automated AI security engineer.
  • The Problem: Sensitive data (API keys in Slack, customer spreadsheets in Gmail/Drive) is scattered, unmonitored, and invisible to perimeter tools.
  • The Setup: Connect Matters.AI via native, read-only APIs/OAuth (Google Workspace, Slack, M365) for real-time and historical scanning without user latency.
  • Coverage View: Maps all connected apps, drives, and channels to explicitly highlight unmonitored blind spots.
  • Dual-Tier Classification: Uses document-level semantic models combined with micro token-window analysis (analyzing surrounding words) to eliminate regex false positives.
  • Remediation: Provides a targeted risk ledger allowing one-click actions (revoking exposed API keys or restricting public file permissions).
  • Next Up (Episode 2): Data Lineage and Duplicate File Analysis to track how sensitive data moves and multiplies across SaaS platforms.

Somewhere in your company’s Slack workspace, an engineer pasted a cloud API key to fix a midnight deployment. In someone’s Google Drive, a spreadsheet containing customer phone numbers and payment details sits with “Anyone with the link can view” permissions.

Neither employee acted with malicious intent, but both created invisible security risks that traditional firewalls and perimeter controls completely miss.

Welcome to Episode 1 of our video series. In this post, we take a hands-on look at how Matters.AI works as your automated AI security engineer for SaaS data. We will walk step-by-step through setting up connectors, viewing your coverage boundaries, running dual-tier data classification, and remediating high-risk exposures directly inside the product interface.

Here is what you will learn in this post:

  • How to connect SaaS platforms using native, read-only API connectors.
  • How to use the Coverage View to spot unmonitored blind spots.
  • How Matters.AI uses context-aware classification to stop regex false positives.
  • How to run automated one-click remediation to fix exposed files and secrets.

Step 1: Connect Your SaaS Apps via Native APIs

Instead of routing traffic through network proxies or installing local desktop agents, Matters.AI connects directly to SaaS platforms using vendor-native REST and Event APIs. This ensures zero latency for end users and zero interference with daily operations.

API Integration Flow

The ingestion pipeline relies on secure, read-only authorization. Administrators grant OAuth scopes and subscribe to push webhooks to establish baseline metrics and monitor real-time file updates.

Let’s look at this initial connectivity flow:

saas security risk

In the Interface

  1. Navigate to Integrations > Connectors in the Matters.AI dashboard.
  2. Select your SaaS application (e.g., Google Workspace, Slack Enterprise, Microsoft 365).
  3. Authorize read-only access. For Google Workspace, deploy a Service Account with domain-wide delegation for drive.readonly and gmail.readonly scopes. For Slack, grant channels:history and files:read permissions.
  4. Once authorized, Matters.AI starts a two-track scanning engine: a historical backfill scan for existing files, and real-time webhook subscriptions for newly created messages and edits.

Step 2: Audit Your Surface Area in the Coverage View

You cannot secure data you don’t know exists. Once connectors are active, the Coverage View dashboard builds an inventory of all discovered accounts, drives, and channels, highlighting any unmonitored blind spots.

Below is an overview of the monitoring boundaries inside the dashboard:

Audit Your Surface Area

In the Interface

  • Track Workspace Health: Check connection statuses and live API sync states across all connected enterprise suites.
  • Identify Coverage Gaps: If a new private channel is created or a drive’s permissions prevent access, the system highlights the unmapped percentage so you know exactly where your visibility ends.

Step 3: Classify Data with Dual-Tier Context

Traditional Data Loss Prevention (DLP) tools rely on simple pattern matching (regex). A 16-digit trace ID in a software log file often triggers a false credit card alert, creating endless noise for security teams.

Matters.AI eliminates false positives by running a Dual-Tier Context Engine inside its processing pipeline.

Let’s examine how the multi-layered analyzer evaluates incoming files:

How the Interface Displays Findings

  1. Tier 1 (Document Type): The engine first identifies what a file actually is (e.g., Vendor Contract, Source Code, Payroll Export, Medical Record).
  2. Tier 2 (Specific Sensitive Value): The engine isolates specific values like credit cards, Social Security numbers, bank details, passwords, and API keys.
  3. Context Check: The platform evaluates the surrounding words. A 16-digit number sitting next to “timestamp” and “status_code” is ignored. That same number sitting next to “Cardholder” and “Exp Date” is flagged immediately.

Step 4: Fix Risk Directly from the Dashboard

Instead of presenting an abstract metric like “2,000,000 files scanned,” the Findings Ledger gives you a prioritized list of specific, high-risk items requiring attention.

We can see some example remediation workflows here:

What’s Next

Connecting directly through native APIs, maintaining full coverage visibility, and using dual-tier classification allows security teams to find and fix real SaaS data risks quickly, without dealing with high false-positive rates.

Coming Up in Episode 2

Finding sensitive data is only the first step. Once a document containing sensitive customer details or API keys is created, employees frequently copy, download, re-upload, and share that content across different drives and channels.

In Episode 2, we will build on this foundation by looking at Data Lineage and Duplicate File Analysis. We will demonstrate how Matters.AI tracks sensitive data as it moves and multiplies across your SaaS ecosystem, helping you remove redundant files and reduce your overall risk surface.
